Rainbow House is set up to
be a recreation base camp.
Premier fishing is available
within minutes on the
renowned McCloud River as
well as the McCloud
Reservoir. The Sacramento,
Pitt, and Fall Rivers are
scenic day trips.
The surrounding waters offer
kayaking, waterskiing, and
sailing.
Hiking trails
abound. The Pacific Crest
Trail passes just south of
the town and is accessible
from several locations.
If you are a mountain biker,
there are plenty of trails
and roads to explore or take
a blast down the ski slopes.
Mt. Shasta Ski
Park sponsors various
music and food festivals
throughout the summer. There’s
snowboarding, downhill and
cross country skiing, and
snowshoeing when the white
stuff piles up. The
snowmobile park is also open
in the winter with miles of
groomed, marked trails.
When
the snow disappears, choose
from the several golf
courses in the area
(McCloud, Shasta, and
designer Shastina).
Morrell and Bolete mushrooms
are hunted in late spring.
Medicine Lake, an old
volcano crater and the
surrounding Lava Beds
National Monument are a
haven for rock hounds.
Permits to collect obsidian,
lava, and geods are free and
available at the local
Forest Service office.
The
McCloud Railroad runs
the
Shasta Sunset
dinner
and excursion trains on
weekends and holidays. They are also
available for private
occasions. The recently
restored
Mercantile building
has several unique shops
including, arguably, the
best candy store on the
planet. The local
restaurants are within
walking distance of the
Rainbow House. Several
denominations hold regular
Sunday services in the
historic churches in town.
